East-Side Update
East-Side Update \r\n \r\nBy Andrew Newell \r\n \r\nBackwards Red Sox hats, dirty Carhartts, muddy back roads, and the rattle of Budweiser cans in the back of your heavy Chevy…oh yeah… Spring time in Vermont. Between now and July 15th the members of the US Ski Team are thinly spread throughout the country in their hometowns. Since I’m the only one over here in VT I figure I should give you all an update on what is going down. \r\n \r\nClassic East coast weather. Just yesterday I was freezing my tail off with 45-degree rain, and today it is 80 and sunny, which can only mean one thing. We have about 24 hours until full-blown black fly invasion and a few weeks of hacking on little bugs while training. You can just open your mouth while riding your bike and get a nice little feed that will keep you going strong for the rest of the work out. \r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\nFor me the spring is a great time to get some good base training in while being at home and close to sea level. It’s nice to be at a low altitude where we can move along at a good pace in distance workouts without getting our heart rates too high. It’s also really helpful for speed training and you really can’t beat the roller skiing terrain out here. Right now I’m also working on a lot of strength in the gym and trying to really build basic strength with a special focus on the lower body. I think my skinny legs have been holding me back a little in skating so it’s a goal for the summer beef up a little bit. Working construction three days a week for Foster and Sons is also a good way to get the core in shape and increase full body strength. \r\n \r\nUVM will be getting out of school this week and Gus Keading is home from NMU so the local V.T.M crew will be together again. That’s when the summer really gets underway with lots of horseshoes, mudding, shooting, saunas, and the new projects (a ‘69 Cadillac Coup de Ville, and a ‘68 Fury with the top sawed off). Most importantly though the training group will get bigger and the quality of workout will increase. We all work together during the morning and then train after work so we can push each other everyday. Ethan Foster is coming up on his last season at UVM and is ready to take some risks with training and really go for it next season. Sverre Caldwell and the Stratton Mtn. School will also begin group training three times a week, which brings out great young skiers like World Junior competitors Bret Bedard and Morgan Smyth. I think it’s really important to get big training groups together with all different aged skiers. It allows the younger skiers to get a glimpse at some of the training they will be doing in the years to come. \r\n \r\nThat’s all for now from Vermont. I’ll keep everyone posted in the weeks to come. \r\n \r\nSki on! \r\nNewell \r\n \r\n
\n Newell sent this picture to the Team Today editors. Team Today was unaware that Newell owned a bike. We're pretty sure he snuck into someone's garage and took this photo. To that person we apologize...however, we'd like to comment on your nice ride! Sorry Newell...it takes a little more than a picture to get into the "Skatin' for Satan" motorcycle gang.
