Get to Know the Team, Part 10
Luke Bodensteiner is the "man behind the scenes" of the US Sross-country, Nordic combined, and Jumping Teams. A former racing member of the team, Luke is still able to make it to the weight room for about 20 minutes a week - 3-times seven-and-a-half minutes. He manages to stay fit using what we call the "Executive workout" \r\n \r\nName: Luke Bodensteiner \r\n \r\nStaff or Athlete: Staff \r\n \r\nHometown: Heber City, UT \r\n \r\nOriginally From: West Bend, WI \r\n \r\nCollege: University of Utah \r\n
\n Luke and daughter Tea.
\r\n \r\nHighschool: West Bend West \r\n \r\nClub: \r\n \r\nBirthdate: Sept. 29, 1970 \r\n \r\nWeight: 210 – definitely the heaviest in this group, but not as bad as when I hang out with the jumpers I also get to work with – I’m twice the size of World Cup jumper Clint Jones! \r\n \r\nHeight: 6’1 \r\n \r\nMarital Status: Married to Vibeke (a ballet dancer from Norway). We have a 2-year old daughter, Thea. She was born 8 hours after the closing ceremony at the Olympics in Salt Lake, and had 8 days on skis last year – watch out Johnson! \r\n \r\nFavorite Book: Macbeth by Shakespeare – more of a play. \r\n \r\nFavorite Film: Schindler’s list – a very inspiring story about doing the right thing for others, even when it might not seem like the right thing for you. \r\n \r\nFavorite Food: Barbacoa burrito at Café’ Rio in Salt Lake City, although I’ve had it so much lately, I’m in danger of burning out. \r\n \r\nFavorite Music: No Doubt. Gwen Stefani is my female hero. \r\n \r\nFavorite Ski Area: Soldier Hollow is in my backyard, and is tough to beat. But skiing at Telemark brings me back to my roots. The Bill Koch trail is my all-time favorite for classic skiing, although it’s been 20 years since I’ve skied it (damn, I think that was before we skated…) \r\n \r\nFavorite Race: I have a few. Dobbiacco/Cortina is a race that follows an old railroad track from Dobbiacco to Toblach, ITA. Very flat and very fast, with some rad trestles over big ravines, and sections through pitch-black tunnels. The Al Johnson in Crested Butte is an uphill downhill Telemark race, which is a blast. The last time I did it, Rebecca D crushed me on the climb (I was wearing a suit made completely out of duct tape), and beat me by 5 seconds at the finish. So I guess it isn’t my favorite. The American Birkebeiner is the king of all races in the U.S. But my real favorite is the Pub to Pub in Falls Creek, AUS…that’s a story for another time. \r\n \r\nBest Result(s): ‘92 Olympics – 27th. It was a big achievement for me. \r\n \r\nGoals For Skiing: For the U.S. Ski Team to be the best in the world. For the sport to develop professionally in the U.S. – more teams, more prize money, more spectators. For my daughter to enjoy every time we get to ski together. \r\n \r\nHobbies: Mountain biking. Volunteering time with Right to Play. Spending time with my family. Telling Carl Swenson stories. \r\n
