The USST's second camp of the season is underway. Today is our first and only day away from either training or testing for this camp and the crew are out enjoying a BBQ, some swimming and even some boating, waterskiing, and wake surfing (leaving me to do this update).
The first few days were taken up by testing and the results have been just what I was hoping. The things we focused on brought the gains we expected. In most cases everyone is better now than they were a year ago in October, and everyone is better than they were a year ago in July not to mention this past May.
It is July and the things we focused on (individual focus for the most part) we accomplished. This will allow us to go into the next training period with confidence and a new set of goals. The work we have done is summer work, ground work and the ground work is well laid.
After the testing we got down to some regular training. The temps are hot as they seem to be everywhere but training has gone very well. We've done several hard workouts - monitored them closely and all the athletes are getting a better handle on controling their intensity in hard workouts. That is vital when you are doing more than a few a week, esp at altitude.
We've also been in the weight room 2 - 3 times a week and otherwise done speed training and distance training - not a ton of anything - just solid training, well monitored, well carried out. No one will go home cooked because for many of the team the next stop is New Zealand and a lot of training there and for the others training must go on continuously.
More to come from the July Camp later on...
