It's Hard Work

It’s Hard Work
\r\n
\r\n3 x 1 x 3 all out, that is. Hard work is a term we hear a lot, but until you have fallen into the bushes with fatigue or puked on your own feet I will not be convinced.
\r\n
\r\nWe returned from San Diego on Sunday after a few days of easy training to perform some tests (strength tests, sub-max lactate test) and today we are back at training full bore.
\r\n
\r\nToday’s recipe for success called for Level 5 intervals. That is lactate tolerance. Anytime you have the word lactate in the recipe you are looking at trouble and any time a workout calls for tolerating something you are looking at more trouble.
\r\n
\r\nLevel 5 intervals are all out. You are supposed to hurt, you are supposed to cringe, you are supposed to accumulate lactic acid and then you are supposed to tolerate it.
\r\n
\r\nWe did 3 sets of 3 one-minute intervals bounding with poles (total of 9 minutes “on”). There were 4 minutes between intervals and 6 between sets. That is a lot of rest. It is not enough rest.
\r\n
\r\nProof. I caught a glimpse of Chris Cook at the top of the hill hanging on his poles. I turned around to cheer for someone else and turned back up the hill. Chris was gone. I turned again to cheer for another person and then looked back up the hill. Chris was crawling out of the weeds beside the trail. He had simply fallen over, stayed there for a few moments and then climbed back out and back down the hill for two more intervals.
\r\n
\r\nAlso suffering today were Kris Freeman who said dryly, “this is low on the fun scale,” Justin Freeman, who said very little, Leif Zimmerman, who said, “this is my last one,” about six times, Torin Koos who said, “I have not hurt like that… in a long time,” Lars Flora, who said, “whew…” and Andy Newell who said, “harruuuuuckkk!” and left his lunch in a puddle trail side.
\r\n
\r\nThat’s hard work. No debating that.
