Tour de Dewey: Press Release
The Tour de Dewey: Press Release \r\n \r\nThe Tour de Dewey, an annual cycling stage race extravaganza is scheduled for October 2, 2004 at 9PM in my dear hometown of Boulder, CO. The weekend will begin with a pre party on Friday, followed by an epic single-speed mountain bike ride Saturday (usually about 6 hours, including stops for safety breaks) and the main event Saturday night at 9PM. Last year there were about 200 “competitors” in this rolling festival of debauchery. \r\n \r\nThe TdD traditionally opens with cyclists dressed in all manner of costume on all type of two-wheeled contraptions descending upon a park to compete in the “Shotgun” Prologue where heats of shotgunning beers produce the prologue champion. The prologue is rapidly followed by a neutral transfer by bike path to another park in order to keep the authorities at bay. After the parade through Boulder, the second stage, typically the time trial, is run. All competitors are required to ride the same machine, which is usually a barely functional piece of crap that has been recklessly sabotaged to guarantee dangerous crashes as competitors navigate the out and back course. Racers make a lap around a far cone, return to the pit to slam a beer, then complete another lap while being blinded by flashing cameras and the sting of alcohol from flying beverages. There are usually some other events like a Criterium, but nobody seems capable of remembering what they are. \r\n \r\nAs you can see from the photo below, style takes precedence over speed, and by the time we get to the bar, you will have enough Mad Dog in your belly that you will be completely oblivious of the fact that you are out in public wearing a full-length Spanish Ski Team lycra skinsuit, a furry Russian hat, enormous winter boots and a fluorescent Purple, Yellow and Pink Italian Parka. Many traditions will be honored such as the bike pile (200 cruiser bikes parked in front of a bar with a stack of bikes 20-feet high is pretty cool to see), cheating, and the much-anticipated Mystery Stage. \r\n \r\n
